The Dark Spirit will have a Small Role in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra

Grey Delisle, the voice actress of Azula, recently held an interview in which she discussed her voice acting experiences during the course of The Last Airbender. After a multitude of humorous remarks, Grey was finally asked about The Dark Spirit.

In case you’re unfamiliar with The Dark Spirit, let me fill you in: Some time ago, Grey Delisle used Twitter to confirm that she’d been hired to do voice work for a character known as The Dark Spirit. We never received too much insight on the character at first, so I did some speculation in order to get potential ideas out to the fandom.

But even after Comic-Con, information on The Dark Spirit was limited. Based on what Grey Delisle said in her recent interview, however, it doesn’t seem like there was much to say about The Dark Spirit in the first place. According to Grey, The Dark Spirit will have a “teeny, tiny part” in the upcoming book.

When Grey Delisle was asked if she could “tell us anything about [her] new role as “The Dark Spirit”, her reply was as followed:

All I can say is that I have a teeny, tiny part. It’s not a huge deal at all, so don’t get too excited, haha. It would be amazing if they brought back Azula, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen. But maybe if the fans wanted her to come back, she would because the creators really seem to care about the fans’ opinions.

[The Dark Spirit] It’s a totally different kind of voice and it’s a totally different kind of character. It’s a very different voice than anything I’ve ever done. It’s super creepy and super scary. It was a challenge, vocally.

Because Grey Delisle has a tiny part in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra, we can confirm that The Dark Spirit’s role will also be severely limited. This effectively wipes out any chances of The Dark Spirit being the main antagonist since the Book’s villain will require an extended role.

But I have a feeling that The Dark Spirit’s role will still be important to the overall outcome of the Book. I’d expect The Dark Spirit to be similar to Koh’s character from The Last Airbender just because it seems to be another important Spirit that Korra will almost certainly encounter.

Grey Delisle fans may be saddened by the news, but they’d be excited to know that she’ll have another role in Book 3 of The Legend of Korra. There is no word yet on the extent of the role, but I’d say her character will be introduced fairly quickly since she already started recording.

  1. Awwww…I was getting excited over the Dark Spirit… Wonder what the main villain will be now or maybe it will be a whole army of villains… Anyway maybe this seasons we will get a huge cliff hanger at the end!!:) I love cliff hangers…. But anyway excellent post, as always!!

    • I don’t think this season will be left on a cliff hanger as it is meant to be individual from other seasons. But Book 3 could have a cliff hanger leading into book 4 since its a newly planned idea.

      • Yeah, I hope they just have Book 3 lead into Book 4, that way the story doesn’t seem as rushed as Book 1 was. If they do that then they can have some fun episodes in between.

  2. It sounds as if the Dark Spirit has been reduced to perhaps the role that that strange talking monkey held upon Aang’s first journey to the spirit world?

    • I don’t think the role will be that small. The Dark Spirit will be an important character simply because we were told about her, but she just won’t be as involved in the Book as we’d previously thought. That’s why I compared her to Koh: she’ll be important (like Koh), but her role will be limited.

  3. then who is the main villain!? it will be totally lame because how do they now expect to top Amon!? he was amazing!

    • I agree. I’m really not sure up to this point. But I wish they would create a villain that would last the remainder of the series (3 books) kind of like Ozai.

      • it would be lame to replace him with another human villain, how could it get more terrifying then some one who can take your bending and he was so creepy! i hope they give us more of those type of bad guys!

  4. Is it possible that the dark spirit will be in both books 2 and 3. Maybe the dark spirit will have a more important role in book 3.

    • Possible, but unlikely since Book 2 is supposed to be standalone much like Book 1.

      • So, Book 1 is stand-alone, Book 2 is stand-alone, and Books 3 and 4 will be related?

      • Well, Book 3 and 4 COULD be related because they are newly planned and we don’t know too much about their relations. But Books 1 and 2 have always been considered two standalone plots.

      • Hmmm…okay. Was it that way for AtLA, too?

      • I have not Indra, to be honest. I got interested in Avatar when the series was about to end. Then I heard about LoK, realized that there weren’t many blogs about so I decided to start this blog up. I used to have a blog about Halo and other Xbox games. Wasn’t fun, and the community wasn’t nearly as great as this one.

      • atla was plan as one long journey showing aang growth. korra was greenlight as a mini series of 12 episode. then a year later a second season was given. yeah i hated the first season ending 😛 but nevermind, i think and believe book 3 and 4 might share more of a storyline. i just afraid they solve everything to easy 😛

okay the series was first green lighted on july 21 2010 with 12 episode first season. It was given 14 episode on march 8 2011. so they had a year to rewrite the first season. so they could had rewriten it.
the series aired on april 14 2012

  5. A completely different voice, huh? That kind of dampens my spirits (no pun intended) a little. I was hoping that the Dark Spirit would be Azula in the spirit world or something along those lines. Oh well, Bryke has never disappointed before. Great article, as always! 🙂

    • Thanks, Catherine!

I also thought The Dark Spirit could be the voice of Azula, but it looks like that rumor has been busted.
